After watching this video, I just ordered the game (+expansion) as a birthday gift for a friend of mine. Hope it gets here in time ^^ I tend to be a bit late when it comes to birthday presents :D
Hope you (and your friend) enjoy it! :)
@@DriveThruReview I'm sure we will. You haven't let me down so far :D
Is it still worth it nowadays?
Good question. I haven't played it in a few years, but I still get the hankering to :)
Just got the revised edition. Totally agree with what you say. Not an amazing game, combat is dull and drawn out HeroQuest. But the compagnie makes it enjoyable. Not enjoying the rulebook. Very scattered, which makes it hard to find answers to questions that arise while playing
Hey Barry. My opinion has actually improved quite a bit over the years. But.... that's because I have added copious expansions. The vanilla base box... is very bland. But, now we've played a couple of campaigns since the time of this video, they've been a blast. Adding the variety of enemies adds some spice to it. (But, with the counter that you basically have to "buy" into the game to make it "good") :)
@@DriveThruReview that’s the trap. I was going to instantly get expansions but thought it wise to just dip my foot in the pool. Thanks for the advice Joel. Could you advise some of the better expansions?
@@BarryDoubletBoardGames Caverns of Cynder, Trederra, Derelict Ship. Those are my personal favorites, good for variety of setting/terrain. Any of those.. and then probably sprinkle in a couple of the Enemy Packs. I like having the recurring "named" enemies that sometimes harass the player. "You again!"
Firstly! forgive my Ignorance of this stuff. I am looking around, and found Game Toppers. Went to th website and decided to try youtube first. Anyways,...my question is how well do they stand-up to leaning-on the edges? Would a dumb-player not paying attention, tip! the whole table and get his butt-pushed out the door? How Stable are theyonce assembled? They just "Balance" on another table,...right?
That would depend on the table underneath more than anything. If you didn't have a table big enough to handle the size of your particular Topper you would have that problem.
Years later and Mark Latham should be ashamed of having his name on this game. Kickstarter remains unfulfilled with not much to indicate they spent the money on even trying to produce the game. Used kickstarter to get $75 off of backers and then another 25 off gamesfound, but added an extra .50 cent charge so you can't actually complete the purchase of the pledge (can't pay any amount under $1) to be eligible for a refund. And oh hey they are selling the pdf without even giving the pdf to their backers while flooding the reviews with fake accounts to coverup how blatantly generic and boring the game is. If anyone is seeing this years later steer clear of this game and Blacklist games.
I don't think that's on Mark frankly. The rest of your statement, no question.
As a South African everybody had one of these back in the day....hours of fun 😂
Cards interacting with each other is usually called (soft) synergy 😁
I found you through an old game review where the pinned comment was "I would love to have a backdrop of a game shelf. That's not in the card currently though.".... I wanted to say the quality really improved and I'm happy to see you got your game shelf!
Lumineth are villains.
Finally I found a video that shows off the base box components lol, looked for an hour or so. Not sure if bgg has a single pic of the base box components, cheers! edit: looks like there is, just wasn't obvious before in regards to BGG.
Is there a chance this could be played cooperatively, by all players achieving the leaf collecting in the best possible time?
I don't see why not. Maybe give yourself a turn limit and see if you can beat it.
I finally got a chance to play it (2024) and it's an interesting game. The print and play expansion is interesting, offering new options without changing the game a lot. They should reprint it, with a different theme.
Inserts are important to the value of a game. Talking about them is not boring (to me).
Please advice me to choose which one to be... More funny Repeatable Each time another pleasure No dice or chance Long lasting And at last great pleasure as a solo version also These are: 1)Terraforming Mars 2)Wyrmspan 3)Ark Nova 4)Carnagie 5)Great Western Trial 6)Dune Imperium 7)Lost Ruin of Arnak 8)Meadow 9)Earth 10)Heat Pedal... 11)Cascadia 12)Viticulture 13)Marvel Champions You can also recommend 2 or more... Thank you 🙏
Out of those for solo I would choose any of these: Great Western Trail, Dune Imperium, Lost Ruins of Arnak, Marvel Champions. I think they meet your criteria except for "no chance".
The best thing about HeroQuest is that it DOESN'T REALLY SAY! It's more of a guideline. And the possibilities are endless.
Great to see LoD as your no. 2. I have yet to play, waiting for 1.5 and the new expansion.
Also they added 1 shot mode with preconstructed deck / items (but you could also custoimize with some deck building pretty quickly), and one expansion adds a mini campaign with just 3 bosses. i reall like how they reduced this game to the essence and eliminated unnecessary frills. It is a 4 space board, no dice, just grab a monster and charakters and start playing. and there is a wide decision space from the first round on. it is immediately interesting and choices matter.
Thank you so much for sharing your varied player count experiences. Sounds like a very interesting and fun game!
Would love to see it on Spotify eventually. Great podcast. Thank you.
Great review...how would u rate this 1 to 10?
8?
@@DriveThruReview i Hope to see it in your 2024 top ten!!!We love this game.
Great review!
Thanks Henri.
Mh world is actually amazing. Combat is super cool because the weapons play very different
I’ve enjoyed the game so far and I agree with your analysis. My favourite phrase you used was “fluff text”. That was so good.
Thanks for the review. Do you think the expansions are nice to have, or is it recommended for the full experience?
I think kind of both? You can definitely start out without any expansion boxes, but to add some replayability they are a "must have".
Joel, you rotter! Still haven't got my pledge. Good to see your enthusiasm on this. Makes the wait a bit more bearable.
saw the channel because i was looking at warhammer quest stuff, your other videos are good vibes to listen to while im painting so il def be going through the backlog.
Thanks. Appreciate it. Happy painting :)
Thanks for this video! I really really wish there were a cardboard standee version of this like with Oathsworn. Last I heard the publisher considers the minis essential to the game and won't make a standee version.
Minis = 💰 I like that Awaken Realms is pretty much offering standee versions of all their games now.
@@abandonlife111 Awaken Realms is rich enough to do that but for a relatively small publisher it's pretty much impossible :/ That would have been so good and save on so much space, so fingers crossed for the reprint!
I've played this game just once, but there's no way the minis are essential. I couldn't even understand why we needed the plastic monster there at all, could have been a picture on the board and a spinner to indicate what direction it was facing. Pure conjecture, but I imagine they are driving off a fair number of people who don't want to spend $$$ on a card game.
@@andrewchilton8181 most likely they are saving more money by having a bigger miniature print run than they would be by getting more customers that pay less but a split print run. And a lot of people who would have taken a standee pledge (like me) decided the game was worth it even with the minis, so we still pledged nonetheless. I'm pretty sure minis are never essential, in any game (even wargames could be played with standees tbh)
@@elzheiz I understand their desire to sell minis because people will buy them, but people also buy card games, a lot. I don't even think this game could justify the use of standees for the monster, it's existence is solely to show what direction it faces. Plenty of card games are played and playable without either. This would be like putting minis in ark nova to indicate that your enclosure is occupied by a particular animal. I'm not anti-mini, I have a lot myself, but in this game it really stands out as unnecessary.
I thought this game would just be a box of plastic with some cool art. Glad (and sad) to see I was wrong. I regret skipping the campaign and really hopes it gets a retail release or does get another crowd funding campaign.
If you check out their web page, you can sign up to be notified of availability. I believe it's goibg tobget a reprint campaign (it's a little to large to work at retail).
@@derekgarcia3069 Thank you, will do! :)
Thanks for the review.
The game definitely doesn't try to be narrative, it's exactly like Monster Hunter. They added some because you need some kind of story for the campaign but you can pretty much skip all of it and jump the reward section without any issue. Plus if you want, you can just play expedition mode and play fights directly without bothering with narration! My favourite game of the year so far!
Comment for the algo =)
Hi Joel, I'm quite surprised that you haven't reviewed 'Circadians Chaos Order'.. There's a lot of depth to it and you guys might find it unique and refreshing. Definitely worth considering to put it on top of your wishlist because if you already reviewed Last Light, this creation has possibly slipped away under your radar, and not rightfully so...
p.s. By "you guys" I meant to your heavy gamers (yet open-minded enough, hopefully) firends ☺
Got the physical copy for like 20 bux on Amazon. Super excited to play! Thanks for the video
Thanks for the rundown and comparison.
Awesome introduction to a fun game Easy to homebrew with a deck of cards and extra jokers/jesters and split the deck by colours
30:24 interesting how with the new oath expansion you predicted exactly what they are releasing, I can’t wait!
Well now I really regret not backing it :D
I have an opportunity to get either Lords of Hellas or Ragnarok. Ragnarok costs more, but that's a minor issue. Joel, do you strongly prefer one over the other?
I've not played Ragnarok, so I can't comment unfortunately.
@@DriveThruReview Ah, that's all right. Thanks!
When you have multiple people playing do you find the game chaotic? It sort of seems that way from a gameplay video I watched.
I think with five players, it can be. But, (to me) not excessively so. It works really well at all player counts imo.
@@DriveThruReview Cool. Thanks.
When I started to think about my top I found out that it is extremely difficult task to put co-op games like AH and LOTR next to Netrunner, Destiny and Conquest for example. But still: 1. Android Netrunner 2. SW Destiny (the fun factor here for me is just wow) 3. Arkham Horror LCG / 3.5 LOTR :D 4. WH 40k: Conquest 5. Keyforge 6. Doomtown Reloaded 7. Warhammer Invasion 8. L5R (FFG) 9. Call Of Cthulhu 10. Pagan: Fate of Roanoke :P
Thank you for the knowledge
I remember watching this review as I was just starting in the hobby. I checked out of bgg for about a decade now, but I still remember talking to you there. You are such a nice person. 12 years.... where did it go?
Hi I just come to your review on this game and it looks great, but I’m not sure whether it goes to a similar experience comparing to Dine: Imperium. I have got the base game and rise of ix expansion and my friends loved it as well, it would be great if you can parallel these games for me thanks!!
For me, it would be Dune: Imperium all the way. They are somewhat different styles of games though. This is a more traditional area control style game.
well done, great review
I'm so uncertain about this game, so many mixed reviews.
I think I stated in the video (can't remember) but I really didn't care for it until the expansion.
Just bought fingerboard discs at Game. Its a nice game
Thanks so much for checking out Last Light! I’m stoked you enjoyed it!!! I was hoping it would be right up your alley!! 🚀🚀🚀
Hi mate, thanks for the vid. If handy, appreciate if you can advise on the card size, gsm, sheen that you used for printing out the cards? Thanks.
Most of them are: Skat Size Cards2.32"×3.58" (58.9×90.9mm) Card stock: (S30) Standard Smooth Card finishing: MPC game card finish Those will match the originals.
@@DriveThruReview Appreciate you replying. Thanks again and all the best.
So is it fair to say this will be in your Top 10 for this year?
This year I have no idea. It probably would be in the discussion, but if I would have had a chance to get to it last year, it would 100% have been in my Top 10.
@@DriveThruReview Uuuuh sounds like this year's Top 10 is going to be a good one!!
Yeah, this game ended up being a nice surprise for me. It looked pretty solid and I like Roy, so I knew I would buy it to try, regardless... but then it ended up being maybe my favorite game of the year. :-) Totally blown away by how fun this one was. Love it.
Where do you get the crew sheets from
Can get from their website or the BoardGameGeek.com page for the game iirc.
